Anyone that is involved in designing and manufacturing products will find this course incredibly valuable. Most of the examples are from manufacturing and will be familiar to people in this industry.

Quality problems cost companies lots of money. When you can resolve elusive problems, that puts money back to the bottom line where it belongs. The return on investment for this course is among the best you’ll find. I have solved many difficult problems using the techniques I teach in this course.

I have worked in Quality Control in Manufacturing for all of my career. I started out as an inspector in a heat treating company when I was a teenager. As with many people, my first job set the path forward. I have worked in many manufacturing companies including foods, medical devices, plastics, tools and have implemented various Quality Management Systems in all of them (ISO 9001, ISO 13485, ISO 17025...).

But the best part of my job was solving difficult problems. So as I acquired ASQ certifications (CQE was first) and learned new techniques, I was able to solve tougher problems.

I was introduced to Six Sigma in the late 1980s and knew that this was a body of knowledge worth knowing. I ended up gaining a Black Belt certification. After many projects and millions of dollars in savings and also training hundreds of Green and Black belts, I qualified for and passed the ASQ Master Black Belt. I was the first in Canada and 13th overall. Today, there are just over 200 ASQ MBBs worldwide.

I've lead many projects and each time I solved a tough problem I would reflect on the techniques that worked. This is what you will get from my course: the best techniques from real-world experience with examples.

Experience and qualifications


I am the first ASQ certified Master Black Belt in Canada and an instructor for Lean, Six Sigma, and Quality Management courses at the British Columbia Institute of Technology.

My work covers over 30 years of experience in manufacturing where I have been employed in Quality Management and Six Sigma roles.

My experience:

  • 30 years in manufacturing plastics, automotive, medical devices, batteries, power tools, consumer electronics, and food products.

My history in the automotive manufacturing industry.

The automotive industry has developed some of the best quality methods to support their suppliers, however, problem solving tools are limited. I used some not-so-common nonparametric statistical techniques to solve some difficult problems many times.

My history in the manufacturing of batteries industry.

Quality problems in battery manufacturing can be difficult to solve. Brainstorming has its limits because in many cases, we are dealing with new knowledge. Experimental design and data science techniques have helped me to resolve some very costly challenges with primary and secondary lithium batteries.

My history in the food production industry.

Several companies I worked with had a similar problem - that of excess variability product weight. I used variation reduction strategies to identify which production processes were contributing the most.
